Spotlight: Alexander Hammett
The members of NOVA CATS have a saying, “Some people are about it and some aren’t”. And while we at Novacats don’t always agree on everything, like how Kevin is convinced Diet Coke is healthy for you, we all do agree on one thing. That Alexander Hammett is “about it”
Being the youngest of 6 children, from Upper Marlboro Maryland, Alex has always been drawn to the arts. Growing up in the golden age of cartoons and television, led to Alex seeing a plethora of shows and movies. But the one that stood with him the most, and showed him what storytelling can be, is the Nickelodeon TV series Avatar the Last Airbender.
A series like Avatar, while geared towards children, helped show a young Alex what a complete story is! It showed happiness, sorrow, friendship, love, and character growth! As Alex grew up, that idea of a complete story stuck with him. And when time came for him to go to college, he picked George Mason University, and studied film, because he wanted to create stories that pass the feeling that he had captured when he was a child, to other people. Alex himself has said “I just want to make the things I loved to see as a kid with people who look like me. The more people I can inspire to make the things they love, the better.”
Alex has won numerous awards for his acting, and directing, and has helped tell complete stories about people of color.
Some of Alex’s works include NOVA CAT’S 2023 short film ‘NOIA’, NOVA CAT’S 2023 Film 'Luna', “Command the Series”, and Novacats upcoming short film, ‘And Then There Was’.
