Love and Film!

Ah Romance. Romance is at the heart of everything we as humans do. Many decisions, from the clothes that we wear, to the car that we drive, come from what people think will make them attract the other sex. Romance is a complicated thing in general, so why wouldn’t dating in the film world be just as complicated?!

Dating in the film world can become complicated due to a few factors. It can come with some strong benefits, and some harsh downsides. So we, the Novacats, are going to lay out the ones we see the most often, so that as you go through life as a filmmaker, you can decide if you want to date within the field or not!

PROS

  • Scheduling

    • The nature of filmmaking, means that both you and your partner can work similar schedules. You both get that this isn’t a 9-5 job, so dating can find time for one another can be one less stressor!

  • Understanding Struggles

    • You both understand that this industry has its ups and downs, and sometimes people who are outside of the industry don’t truly get that. It can be hard to explain to someone the stress of handling the dailies of a feature film, and forgetting if you have a backup of the date or not!

  • Sharing a Network

    • With both of you in film, potentially both of your work networks just doubled, if you both weren’t already running in the same groups. This can help double or triple one's income quickly.

  • Helping each other Grow

    • With you both working in the same field together, you have someone who you know has your back, that you can grow with. You both can develop as a couple, and as a filmmaking duo! Power Couple Action!

CONS

  • Both deal with the same Boom or Bust nature of the industry

    • Earlier I talked about how it is nice to have someone who understands the struggles, like the Boom or Bust nature of this industry. However if you are both dealing with it, there will be some months where it will feel like you two are barely scrapping by.

  • Lack of Benefits

    • Sadly most of the work in our field is contract based. Yes there are Unions, but they have their own issues, and many benefits like 401k and Healthcare are dependent on the amount of Union Days you work, and if the industry is slow, you will both not have either of those benefits.

At the end of the day, what you both do for work, should really not be a priority in dating. If you found someone you love, that is what should be the most important thing. To hear more about the Cats talk about this, listen to the new blog post!
